Mark Hill Wind Farm occupies 580-ha / 1433-acre site on the southeastern slopes of the Garleffin Hill, to the southeast of the Muck Water, in South Ayrshire, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Barrhill. Formally commissioned by First Minister, Alex Salmond, on 13th June 2011, the site comprises 28 Gamesa G87/2000 turbines, each 110m (361 feet) in height to blade tip, with a rotor diameter of 87m (285 feet) and generating 2 MW, giving a total output for the site of 56 MW. The wind farm is owned and operated by Scottish Power Renewables, part of the multi-national Iberdrola group. The facility was developed by Force 9 Energy and built by HBS Construction of Ballieston, who were responsible for the clearance of semi-mature commercial forest, the construction of around 10 miles (16 km) of new access roads, installation of turbine bases, a control building and electrical infrastructure.
A community fund has been established providing in the order of £80,000 per annum for local projects. Already a new heating system has been installed in the village hall in Barrhill and local residents have benefited from home insulation.
