Tiree High School

(Ard Sgoil Thiriodh)

Tiree High School (Gael: Ard Sgoil Thiriodh) has both primary and secondary departments, providing education for 77 pupils aged between 3 and 18, with a staff of 35 (2011), all on a single site at Cornaigmore, in the north of the Inner Hebridean island of Tiree. A school opened here in 1876, but children seeking secondary education had to go to the mainland (usually boarding in Oban). Cornaig Higher Grade School opened in 1936, initially offering only a four-year programme of education, until the age of sixteen. This became a full six-year secondary education from 1983 and the Cornaigmore building was extended in 1986 and again in the 2000s. It is now the only school on the island, the other primary schools having closed during the 1970s. The school has good facilities, with technology including video conferencing equipment. Gaelic-medium education is provided and the school provides a strong musical training with many pupils identifying with the traditional music and culture of the island. A cafeteria provides school meals. Tiree High School is used in the evenings by community organisations seeking a meeting place.
