Cuillin Hills National Scenic Area

Formally identified in 1978 and covering an area of 21,900 ha (54,116 acres), the Cuillin Hills National Scenic Area extends from Glen Brittle and Rubh' an Dunain in the west to Broadford in the east, and from Loch Sligachan in the north to comprehend the northern section of the Strathaird peninsula in the south. It also takes in the island of Soay. The unique qualities of this area include its magnificent mountain scenery, with the contrasting Black and Red Cuillin; the iconic images of crofting townships with dramatic backdrops; and some of the most challenging mountain climbs in Scotland along the Cuillin Ridge.
