Located on the edge of the village of Scalloway on the west coast of the Shetland Mainland, Scalloway Primary School opened in 1876 and delivers education to 136 pupils aged from four to twelve, with its catchment extending beyond the village to a rural hinterland including the islands of Trondra, West Burra and East Burra.
Originally known as Scalloway Public School, it offered secondary education up to fourth year as Scalloway Junior High School until 2011. The original stone building, which now houses the nursery department, was enlarged 1894 - 1910 and a new building constructed adjacent in 1986. Senior pupils (Years 5 and 6) had to make the journey to Anderson High School in Lerwick (only 5 miles / 8 km distant) to complete their studies, but secondary education was discontinued at Scalloway because of the proximity of that under-utilised school, and also due to projected declining numbers.
