Fetlar Kirk

(Tresta Kirk)

A small church located between Tresta Beach and Papil Water on the south coast of the island of Fetlar in Shetland, Fetlar Kirk (or Tresta Kirk) comprises simple grey harled box built in 1790 on the site of a succession of churches which may date back to Viking times. It is surrounded by a cemetery which is thinly populated with gravestones, including three simple crosses which mark the last resting places of three of the crew of the SS Hop from Bergen, torpedoed by a German submarine on 4th February 1940.
