Lerwick War Memorial

Lerwick War Memorial is located at the junction of Hillhead and King Erik Street in the centre of Lerwick, opposite the Town Hall. Constructed in white granite, the monument comprises a slender staff, with shield and sword carving on each face, topped with a cross. This is mounted on a base that is cruciform in plan view and set into a sloping site on a rubble platform. The memorial was the work of Sir Robert Lorimer (1864 - 1929) and was dedicated on 6th January 1924. Bronze plaques bearing the names of those lost in the First World War are displayed around the base. Further plaques were added to commemorate those who died in the Second World War on two separate monument lying to the side of the memorial in 1970. The monument was B-listed in 1996.
