Campbeltown Creamery

Located on Witchburn Road in Campbeltown (Argyll and Bute), a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of the town centre, Campbeltown Creamery produces Scottish Pride cheese and butter, supermarket own-brand products, and the award-winning Mull of Kintyre cheddar. The Creamery was built as the Meadowburn Whisky Distillery in 1824 before being converted to a cheese-manufacturing facility c.1920. Now operated by First Milk, Britain's largest dairy farmer co-operative, the creamery is supplied by 42 local dairy farms and the dairy sector in Kintyre is worth £11 million a year to the local economy. The lush pastures of the Kintyre peninsula produce a rich creamy milk giving Kintyre Cheddar its strong, sweet and crunchy character.

The economics of running a creamery in a location remote from markets has proved challenging over the years.
