Liniclate Wind Turbine

Located in the machair behind the Dark Island Hotel, Liniclate, in the SW of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, Liniclate Wind Turbine represents a £1-million commercial project, with an output of 900 kW. The single Enercon E44 turbine is 77m in height, with a rotor diameter of 44m constructed on a 181.4 cubic m (5.13 million cubic feet) concrete base.

A wind energy demonstration project saw a 60 kW wind turbine installed nearby in 1990 to work alongside the 180 kW diesel generator to heat the adjacent Liniclate Community School and its swimming pool. However this combination system never worked effectively and the turbine was abandoned in the late 1990s. It was bought by a Perthshire-based electrical engineer who revitalised it and again was able to provide power to the school before applying for permission to erect a new larger turbine in 2003. This was installed in 2008. The new turbine was grid-connected and therefore unable to directly supply the school, although pupils monitor the power output as a demonstration in physics and environment classes.
