King's Pavilion

(King's College Sports Pavilion)

Located at the rear of King's College in Old Aberdeen, the King's Pavilion (or formally King's College Sports Pavilion) overlooks the University of Aberdeen's playing fields or King's Lawn. Constructed in the International style to the designs of local architect A.G.R. Mackenzie (1879 - 1963), this two-storey building features a wrap-around balcony, extensive glazing and an overhanging canopy. King's Pavilion was B-listed in 1967. Inside are changing facilities for team sports, a performance gym and an 18-m (20-yard) swimming pool, now used for cold-water activities such as canoe-training. Outside are two rugby pitches, a dedicated lacrosse pitch, tennis court and a synthetic cricket wicket, used for both training and matches. A multi-sports area with a sand-dressed surface accommodates a variety of activities, including five-a-side football and tennis in the summer season.

The King's Pavilion facilities are now linked with Aberdeen Sports Village, a joint venture between sportscotland, Aberdeen City Council and the University of Aberdeen, which is centred on the opposite side of King Street to the east.
