Carmelite Friary

The site of a Friary which was once a house of the Carmelites or White Friars lies on Friar's Brae, to the west of Manse Road, within the policies of Nether Parkley, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) south of the centre of Linlithgow. The Friary was founded c.1290 on land given by Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The friary was attacked in 1559 during the Reformation, although parts of the complex seem to have continued to be used for another decade. The buildings were quarried for stone over the next sixty years. The foundations were exposed and recorded in 1905, while detailed archaeological investigation took place in 1953. The site is now rather disappointing, with the plan of the various buildings marked on the ground by stone slabs.
