A mooring, boat storage and repair facility, and former military installation on the North Ayrshire coast, Fairlie Quay Marina opened in 2003 by Holt Leisure Parks. Occupying a site built as the NATO Boom Depot, boats can be stored under cover in a 5574-sq. m (60,000-sq foot) shed. External storage is provided on 13,935 sq. m (150,000 sq feet) of concrete hard standing. Fairlie Quay has one of the largest Boat lifts in Scotland, a travel hoist capable of lifting vessels up to 30m (98 feet) in length.
The Boom Depot was established in the 1960s as part of the defences on the Firth of Clyde and HM Naval Base Clyde. The immense shed held a chain-link anti-submarine boom which would have been stretched across the narrowest section of the Firth, between Fairlie and Great Cumbrae and then from Great Cumbrae to Bute. The site was well served by railway sidings and includes a pier.
