Bowshank Tunnel

A railway tunnel which takes the Borders Railway under an eastern spur of Bowshank Hill in the Scottish Borders, Bowshank Tunnel overlooks the Gala Water 3¾ miles (6 km) northwest of Galashiels. The tunnel was built for the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway (or Waverley Line) in 1848 and considerably refurbished and strengthened in the 1950s but lay disused following the closure of that line in 1969. However, it was revitalised for use by the new Borders Railway, which opened in 2015. The tunnel is approximately 200m (219 yards) in length. Its north portal is of rubble construction while the south portal is of concrete but formed in the style of ashlar.
