A further education institution in the Flemington district of Motherwell (North Lanarkshire) on part of the site of the former Ravenscraig Steelworks, the Motherwell Campus of New College Lanarkshire moved here in 2009. It began as Motherwell College in 1967 on a site a half-mile (0.8 km) to the southwest. The £70 million campus was officially opened by the HRH The Princess Royal on the 15th January 2010. It comprises a five-storey teaching block, a two-storey workshop block, a seven-storey residential block and a nursery, which together extend to 18,580 sq. m (200,000 sq. feet) and became the base for more than 20,000 students and 500 staff. Motherwell College merged with Cumbernauld College to form New College Lanarkshire in 2013. The campus offers a broad range of full-time, part-time and distance learning courses from school certificate to degree-level. Subjects include animation, design & media, automotive studies, beauty & complementary therapies, business and management, computing & information technology, construction, education, cookery, engineering, hairdressing & make-up artistry, health, health & safety, hospitality, languages, performing arts, photography, social care, social sciences, sport & fitness and travel & tourism.
