Camperdown Tunnel

A railway tunnel in the centre of Dundee, which carries the railway east from Dundee Railway Station, emerging next to Camperdown Street, to the south of East Marketgait. It was built c.1878 to connect the new Tay Bridge Railway Station to the former Dundee East Station thus permitting direct services from Edinburgh north to Aberdeen. The challenge in building this connection was Dundee's Earl Grey and King William Docks and the tunnel therefore skirts just to the north of these, under the busy Dock Street. Until these docks were infilled, the tunnel required permanent pumping to keep it dry.
