Girvan Academy

A local authority non-denominational secondary school in Girvan (South Ayrshire), Girvan Academy is located on The Avenue, next to Victory Park, a half-mile (0.8 km) southeast of the town centre. It has a roll of 520 pupils and a teaching and support staff of 92 (2017). The capacity of the school is 750, and it draws pupils from primary schools in Ballantrae, Barr, Barrhill, Colmonell, Dailly and Maidens, as well as Girvan itself. Pupils are divided into three houses named after local castles; namely Glenapp, Killochan and Penkill.

Girvan Academy came into being c.1812 when the Burgh School and the Parish School (also known as the Grammar School) merged to form Girvan Higher Grade School, which later became Girvan High School and finally Girvan Academy. The school moved to its current site in 1988, leaving overcrowded premises on Wesley Road, which had been extended and also made use of temporary huts. First occupied by the Academy in 1955, this was subsequently redeveloped as Girvan Primary School. The Academy's first home - a fine red-sandstone building on Henrietta Street - is now the Carrick Buildings Learning Centre.
