Clyde Wind Farm South

(Clyde South Wind Farm)

Clyde Wind Farm (South) lies to the south of the M74 motorway and east of the source of the River Clyde at Watermeetings in South Lanarkshire. It comprises 56 Siemens wind turbines, each rated at 2.3 MW, giving a generation capacity of 128.8 MW. The farm extends over Archibald Gair Head, Crookedstane Rig, Horse Pow Hill, Mid Height, Tomont Hill and Wintercleuch Fell, with the turbine locations and access roads cut through the Beattock Forest.

Along with the Clyde North Wind Farm and the later Extension, this represents one of the largest wind farms in Europe, with a total power output of 523 MW. The entire farm is controlled by an Operations Centre at Bidhouse, a mile (1.5 km) east of Clyde South and 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Beattock Summit.

Clyde South began exporting electricity to the grid in summer 2011, and the completed farm was formally opened by First Minister Alex Salmond (b. 1954) in September 2012. The farm is owned and operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) which, in 2016, sold a 30% stake for £355 million to a consortium comprising renewables investor Greencoat UK Wind and Greater Manchester & London Infrastructure Limited (GLIL), a partnership between the London Pensions Fund Authority and the Greater Manchester Pension Fund.

The Clyde Wind Farm also claims to have the largest wind farm Community Investment Fund in Scotland. Administered by South Lanarkshire Council, this is expected to be worth around £22 million to local communities over the lifetime of the wind farm.
