Wellogate Cemetery

Wellogate Cemetery is located on the northern slopes of Hardie's Hill, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southeast of the centre of Hawick. Opened in 1849, it was intended to replace the kirkyard of St. Mary's and Old Parish Church, which was filling up, but soon had to cope with the victims of a cholera epidemic. Several famous sons of Hawick are buried here, including poet and songwriter James Thomson (1827-88), motorcycle racer Jimmie Guthrie (1897 - 1937) and rugby commentator Bill McLaren (1923 -2010). Forty-nine interments are identified as Commonwealth War Graves.
