A large school on Wesley Road, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of the town centre, Girvan Primary draws pupils from the town but also a sizeable rural hinterland. It occupies an Art Deco-style building which was once the home of Girvan Academy, before this moved to a new site in 1988. The building was designed in 1939 but not built until the 1950s, the Second World War having prevented progress. The primary school came here in 1992 and shares the building with Girvan Nursery School. This was the first time that the Girvan Primary had occupied a single building; it had previously been divided between the former Doune Primary School building on the southern edge of the town (now demolished) and the former High School building in Henrietta Street. The school is run by South Ayrshire Council.
