A grand classical-style building on St. George's Road in the Woodside district of Glasgow, Woodside Library was the work of architect J. R. Rhind (1854 - 1918) for Glasgow Corporation. Opened on 10th March 1905, this was the first and largest of seven libraries in Glasgow funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919), who gave £100,000 to the city in 1901 to fund the building of branch libraries. The facade includes pairs of Ionic columns with a grand pediment featuring a sculptured group of a woman reading to her children. The glazed dome and high-arched windows flood the building with natural light. The library was modernised in 1960 and again in 1979, with some attempt to retain original interior features. The library is now run by Glasgow City Council and a Real Learning Centre opened here in 2002.
