Samye Dechen Shing Retreat Centre

(Glenscorrodale Farm)

A secluded Buddhist retreat in the middle of the Isle of Arran, the Samye Dechen Shing Retreat Centre occupies the former Glenscorrodale Farm, to the south of the Ross Road, near the head of Glen Scorrodale, 4½ miles (7 km) west southwest of Lamlash. The farm was the childhood home of former First Minister Jack McConnell (b.1960). It was gifted to the Kagyu Samye Ling Buddhist Monastery and Tibetan Centre in 1994 by an owner grateful for the care he had received from Buddhist monks and converted to a retreat centre ten years later. With a name meaning "the blissful place", it offers 21 places for men on long-term retreats of up to three years, introducing participants to the spiritual practices of the Vajrayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
