A rural railway station in South Ayrshire, Barrhill (referred to as Am Bàrr in Gaelic) lies on the Glasgow South Western Line at Cairnlea, a half-mile (1 km) west southwest of the village of Barrhill. It opened on the Girvan & Portpatrick Junction Railway in 1877 and now comprises a single-track line and passing loop each served by separate platforms, together with a traditional stone-built station building and wooden signalbox. Now operated by ScotRail, Barrhill is unstaffed. An improvement in the frequency of services stopping here has seen passenger numbers increase from only 4568 (2010) to 11,016 in 2015. It is preceded by Girvan Railway Station, 10½ miles (17 km) to the north northwest, and followed by Stranraer, 16 miles (26 km) to the southwest.
