Hillington East Railway Station

(Hillington an Ear)

A suburban railway station in Glasgow City Council Area, Hillington East (known in Gaelic as Hillington an Ear) is situated on both the Inverclyde Line and the Ayrshire Coast Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northeast of Hillington and a half-mile (0.8 km) west northwest of Cardonald. This station was opened in 1934 as Hillington to serve Hillington Industrial Estate but was renamed Hillington East in 1940 on the opening of Hillington West. It comprises two platforms connected by an overbridge serving the outside two of three tracks. There were once four parallel railway tracks here, although these were reduced to two on electrification in 1967 but increased once again to three to cope with additional traffic as part of the Paisley Corridor Improvement Project in 2012.

Now operated by ScotRail, Hillington East is staffed part-time and was used by 253,196 passengers per annum (2016-17). It is preceded by Cardonald Railway Station, a half-mile (1 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Hillington West Railway Station, a similar distance to the west northwest.
