Irvine Railway Station

(Irbhinn)

A two-platform railway station in North Ayrshire, Irvine (referred to in Gaelic as Irbhinn) is on the Ayrshire Coast Line, next to the Rivergate Shopping Centre in Fullarton, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southwest of Irvine town centre. This station opened in 1839 on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway. Much of the station we see today dates from 1876 and comprises two platforms, linked by a tunnel, and the stone-built offices which have much more recently been improved by a glass structure being built on the front. Today, Irvine Station is operated by ScotRail, with regular services to Glasgow Central. It is staffed part-time and was used by 997,912 passengers per annum in 2016-17, a significant increase over 853,638 in 2009-10. It is preceded by Barassie Railway Station, 3½ miles (5.5 km) to the south southeast, and followed by Kilwinning, a similar distance to the north northwest.

Irvine once had another station (Irvine Bank Street), closer to the town centre, which was the terminus of a branch of the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway. This opened in 1890 but closed in 1939. There were also two stations at Bogside serving the race track; one on the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway (1893 - 1930) and the other on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway (1840 - 1967).
