A two-platform railway station in N Dumfries and Galloway, Kirkconnel (referred to as Cille Chonbhaill in Gaelic) lies on the Glasgow South Western Line, on the northern edge of Kirkconnel, a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Kelloholm. Built for the Glasgow, Dumfries & Carlisle Railway, it opened in 1850. Now operated by ScotRail, Kirkconnel Railway Station is unstaffed and is used by around 20,000 passengers per annum (2015). There is a plaque at the station commemorating the poet Alexander Anderson (1845 - 1909), who came from Kirkconnel and worked on this railway. It is preceded by Sanquhar Railway Station, 3 miles (5 km) to the east southeast, and followed by New Cumnock, 7½ miles (12 km) to the west.
