A moderately busy commuter halt on the Shotts Line, Kirknewton Railway Station (known in Gaelic as Eaglais a' Bhaile Ùir) is located at the western end of Kirknewton and 1¼ miles (2 km) east southeast of East Calder in West Lothian. Said to represent the best-preserved of the Caledonian Railway's small stations, it opened in 1848 and comprises an L-plan building featuring sandstone dressings and crowstepped gables. It was known for many years as Midcalder Station but reverted to the name Kirknewton in 1982. Now operated by ScotRail, Kirknewton Railway Station is unstaffed and is used by 51,662 passengers per annum (2015-16). It is preceded by Curriehill Railway Station, 4½ miles (7 km) to the east, and followed by Livingston South, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the west southwest.
