A popular commuter railway station in the Mearns (S Aberdeenshire), Laurencekirk (Gael: Eaglais Labhrainn) is situated on the East Coast Main Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the centre of the village of the same name and 7 miles (11 km) west of Inverbervie. It was originally developed by the Aberdeen Railway and opened in 1849. However, railway rationalisation brought its closure in 1967. The dilapidated station buildings were refurbished at a cost of £3 million and reopened by Stewart Stevenson (b. 1946), the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure & Climate Change, on the 18th May 2009. A 70-space car park was provided adjacent.
Operated by ScotRail, Laurencekirk Railway Station is unstaffed. Its use has greatly exceeded expectations, growing from 56,496 passengers in its first year to 112,914 in 2015. It is preceded by Montrose Railway Station, 8½ miles (14 km) to the south, and followed by Stonehaven, 13 miles (21 km) to the northeast.
