A railway station in Angus, Monifieth Railway Station (known in Gaelic as Monadh Fotha) overlooks the Firth of Tay, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southwest of the town centre. Opened in 1838 on the Dundee & Arbroath Railway, this station is situated on the East Coast Main Line, although only local services stop here. The picturesque wooden station building was removed in the 1980s and re-used at Birkhill Station on the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway. A lattice girder pedestrian overbridge remains. Now operated by ScotRail, Monifieth Station is unstaffed and, with improved services has seen passenger numbers increase from only 1170 in 2010 to 6654 in 2016. It is preceded by Balmossie Railway Station, a mile (1.5 km) to the west southwest, and followed by Barry Links, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the east northeast.
