A busy railway station on the Inverclyde Line, Port Glasgow (Gael: Port Ghlaschu) is situated on Princes Street, at the base of the steep slopes which characterise that town, just to the south of the centre. It opened with the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway in 1841 but has subsequently been much modified. Glass canopies, supported on ironwork, give shelter to passengers on both of its platforms. Now operated by ScotRail, Port Glasgow Station is staffed part-time and is now used by 552,498 passengers annually (2017), a number which has grown steadily over recent years.
It is preceded by Woodhall Railway Station, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the east, but the line splits to the west, with the mainline continuing to Gourock while a single-track branch diverts south to Wemyss Bay. The next station on the mainline is Bogston, a mile (1.5 km) to the west northwest, while Whinhill Railway Station follows 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the west on the Wemyss Bay branch.
