A modern halt on the Borders Railway which serves the village of Stow in the Scottish Borders, Stow Railway station is actually located in Stagehall on the opposite bank of the Gala Water, close to Stow Primary School. It opened with the line in 2015. Built by BAM Nuttall, Stow comprises two platforms serving the single-track line and a passing loop. A station first opened here in 1848 but closed with the demise of the Waverley Line in 1969. The station is now operated by ScotRail, with around 40,000 passengers in its first year after re-opening, although not all services stop here. Passenger numbers had risen to 67,474 by 2016-17. The preceding station is Gorebridge, 12½ miles (20 km) to the north northwest, while the next station is Galashiels, 5½ miles (9 km) to the south southeast.
