Seacliff Harbour

A tiny harbour, said to be Britain's smallest, Seacliff Harbour is located 3 miles (5 km) east of North Berwick and 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Whitekirk in East Lothian. The harbour is cut into red Carboniferous sandstone at The Gegan, a rocky headland which is isolated from the shore at high tide, at the eastern end of Oxroad Bay. The harbour was built in 1890 by Andrew Laidlay, the owner of the Seacliff Estate, who used a steam engine and compressed air to cut into the stone. Measuring no more than 12m (40 feet) along its longest side, with an entrance which is barely 2m (7 feet) wide. Still privately owned, it is now home to a single crab-fishing boat.
