Larkhall Line

A short branch railway which extends south from Haughhead Junction in South Lanarkshire, the Larkhall Line was opened in 2005 by First Minister Jack McConnell (b.1960). It follows the route of one of the Caledonian Railway's Mid Lanark Lines which was built in 1905 but closed in 1965, a victim of Dr. Beeching's scheme for railway rationalisation. The Larkhall Line forms a 3 mile / 5 km single-track offshoot of the Hamilton Circle Line (part of the Argyle Line network), with a passing loop at Allanton, and was electrified from the outset. The terminus is Larkhall Railway Station, with other stations at Merryton and Chatelherault.
