Roughcastle Tunnel

A modern tunnel on the extension of the Union Canal that approaches the Falkirk Wheel, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) west of Tamfourhill, the Roughcastle Tunnel opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project which connected the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal. This 175-m / 575 foot tunnel is lined with sprayed concrete and cuts beneath the Antonine Wall, the Glasgow-Edinburgh Railway Line and Bonnyhill Road. To the south of the tunnel a pair of locks drop the level of the canal to reach a small basin while, to the north, the canal emerges into another small basin and then onto an aqueduct which represents the approach to the Falkirk Wheel.
