Figgate Park

An area of greenspace which follows the Figgate Burn in E Edinburgh, Figgate Park extends to 11.2 ha / 27.6 acres between Duddingston and Portobello. The land was acquired by Edinburgh Corporation in 1933 and opened as a park five years later. It now includes a popular path network with three foot-bridges across the burn, together with Figgate Pond, a play area and picnic benches. The park is bisected by Mountcastle Drive. Areas of grass are mixed with belts of trees, wildflower meadow and informal bulb plantings. The area was previously an industrial site, with the eastern end formed from a clay pit which supplied the raw material to local brick works and the pottery in Portobello.

Now owned by the City of Edinburgh Council, the park is designated a local conservation site and the Friends of Figgate Park are an enthusiastic local volunteer group which arranges events and maintenance.
