Milton Tower

Located on Station Road in Keith (Moray), overlooking the River Isla, Milton Tower, the surviving northern section of Milton (or Milltoun) Keith Castle, built c.1480 by George Ogilvie of Milton. It is the oldest building in the town and a scheduled ancient monument. The gabled tower has two storeys and a garret over a vaulted ground floor. It extends to 7.15m (24.3 feet) E-W by 6.4m (21 feet) N-S, with walls up to 0.9m (3 feet) thick. On the first floor is a fireplace which once served a great hall which was lost with the southern section of the castle.

It was repaired by Margaret Ogilvie in 1601. Born here were St. John Ogilvie, who was martyred in Glasgow in 1615, and John Ogilvie of Milton, who was killed at the Battle of Alford in 1645. Milton passed through marriage to the Oliphant family in 1707, but they were Jacobites and the castle was neglected, progressively becoming a ruin after 1715. In 1829 it was finally abandoned and quarried for its stone.
