Abbot Adam's Bridge

(Kilwinning Bridge)

Abbot Adam's Bridge crosses the River Garnock between the eastern end of Main Street and Bridgend in Kilwinning (North Ayrshire). It comprises a two-arch masonry structure which was built in 1439 with permission from the Pope by Adam Spark, Abbot of Kilwinning Abbey, to replace a ford at this location. A bridge here is mentioned by Timothy Pont in the late 16th C. It was widened and strengthened in 1857 but the earlier bridge can still be seen beneath. The bridge is now C-listed.
