The Lookout

A two-storey wooden construction that provides a visitor centre and viewing point for the Royal Society for the Protection of Bird's Insh Marshes reserve, which forms a substantial part of the Insh Marches National Nature Reserve. Built into a terrace high above the marshland, the Lookout is accessible from a small car park, situated on the B970 road, a half-mile (1 km) east of Ruthven Barracks and 1¼ miles (2 km) east southeast of Kingussie. It gives remarkable views across the Spey Valley to Kingussie and the Monadhliath Mountains, overlooking a substantial drumlin in the centre of the flat-lying marshes. The Lookout was officially opened on 21st August 2010 by Danny Alexander MP (b. 1972) and was part-funded by the Scottish Government and the European Community LEADER programme. The Badenoch Way starts here, and there is a circular walk and bird hides nearby.
