Crawick Multiverse is a unique outdoor event arena and world-class 'artland' located on the site of a former open cast coal mine on the opposite bank of the Crawick Water from Crawick in Dumfries and Galloway. The 22.3-ha / 55-acre site is a major land restoration project, creating a cosmic landscape comprising a series of striking landforms representing astronomical and cosmological features, including universes, galaxies, stars, comets and black holes. The Crawick Multiverse was commissioned by the Duke of Buccleuch on part of his Drumlanrig Estate at a cost of around £1 million. It is the largest outdoor art-work by architect Charles Jencks (1939 - 2019). Planning started in 2005 and work began on site eight years later. Opened to the public on the summer solstice in 2015, it was created primarily using materials found on-site, including thousands of boulders. The landscape combines a pair of 20-m / 66-foot high sculpted hillocks, named the Milky Way and Andromeda, which are topped with stone circles, together with water bodies, a corkscrew megalith and the Sun Amphitheatre can hold up to 5000 people. The site is criss-crossed by paths lined with huge boulders and provides a setting for theatrical events, musical concerts, local community events, weddings and dark sky observations, including an annual three-day festival of performance art and public debates featuring scientists and cosmologists.
