A prominent Gothic spire on the summit of the Hill of Culsh in NE Aberdeenshire, the Culsh Monument lies a mile (1.5 km) north of New Deer. This 24.4m / 80 foot monument was built in 1876 to commemorate William Dingwall Fordyce (1836-75), who was a local landowner and politician. A spiral staircase leads to the viewing platform within the dressed granite ashlar monument, which was designed by the Aberdeen-based architect James Matthews (1819-98). It was funded through public subscription, including contributions from many of his tenants. Culsh Monument has been B-listed since 1971.
