A thoroughly ruined castle on Eilean Mor, a small islet in Loch Gorm in the W of Islay (Argyll and Bute). Loch Gorm Castle was once a square fortification, with round bastions at the corner, first recorded in 1549 to defend the MacDonalds against the MacLeans of Duart. The castle was briefly occupied by Sir Lachlan MacLean, who was besieged by the MacDonalds in 1578 and destroyed in 1608, but rebuilt by Sir James MacDonald of Knockrinsay in 1615, who has escaped from Edinburgh Castle to lead a rebellion against the crown from Islay. This rebellion was put down by Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll, although this castle seems to have survived and was garrisoned by the Campbells until the mid 17th C.
