A ruined Parliamentary church in the centre of the Oa peninsula in the S of the island of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Oa Parish Church is located at Risabus, 5 miles (8 km) west southwest of Port Ellen. This T-plan church is roofless but its walls are complete and a memorial can still be seen inside to its ministers from 1829 to 1930, when the church closed, with the size of the congregation diminished through emigration and the building having been damaged by fire in 1915. Completed in 1828, this was one of a set of churches built across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to designs by William Thomson (1783 - 1860) and Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834), and funded by a grant from Parliament in London - hence Parliamentary Churches. However, Parliament was parsimonious and allowed no more than £1500 to be spent on each site, hence a standardised design was adopted, with two doors, arched windows and a little belfry over one of the gables. This example was constructed by John Gibb and William Minto of Aberdeen.
The Oa was created a quoad sacra parish in 1849 and was united with Kildalton on the closure of the church.
