The Mediaeval Kilnaughton Chapel is a scheduled ancient monument located behind Kilnaughton Bay on the neck of the Oa peninsula, in the S of the island of Islay. Dedicated to St. Nechtan, the present building is probably built on the site of an older chapel, and its eastern end may date from as early as the 12th C., although most of the structure is from the 15th C. Although ruined, the rectangular building remains clearly defined, with rubble walls up to 1m (3 feet) in thickness and gables which stand almost to full height. Two Mediaeval grave slabs are visible within the chapel, along with another which bears the effigy of a knight and more modern graves. The chapel is of national importance and surrounded by an 18th-19th C. graveyard.
