A large cemetery on the south bank of the River Ayr, a mile (1.5 km) southeast of the town centre. Opened in 1862, it extends to 12 ha (30 acres) and has been extended several times. Its entrance is a grand whitewashed archway on Holmston Road. The cemetery includes more than 200 Commonwealth war graves. Notable burials include the novelist George Douglas Brown (1869 - 1902) and James Pollock (1890 - 1958), who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery during the First World War.
