Located next to Craigtoun Country Park on part of the former Mount Melville estate, the Duke's Golf Course sits at 100m (328 feet) above sea level, 1½ miles (2.5 km) southeast of Strathkinness and 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of St. Andrews. Intended to complement the links courses of that town, this parkland golf-course was built by Golf Resorts International Ltd. and is operated alongside the Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, providing an exclusive venue for the hotel's clients. Designed by five-times Open Champion, Peter Thomson, it was inaugurated in 1995 with HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, hitting the first ball and giving the course its name.
American kitchen and bathroom magnate Herbert Kohler purchased both hotel and the Duke's course in 2004 and the course was rejuvenated in 2006 by Tim Liddy, with five completely new holes. With a par of 72, it now measures 7271 yards (6649m). Having developed into one of the finest heathland championship courses in Britain, it hosted the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2003.
There is a purpose-built club-house, with restaurant, bar and meeting rooms, and the St Andrews Golf Academy is located here.
