Stornoway Power Station

The principal source of electrical power for Lewis and Harris, Stornoway Power Station is located on Battery Point overlooking Stornoway Harbour. The North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board opened the diesel-fuelled station in 1950 and it now generates 23.5 MW of power.

In the early 1980s, the Board investigated the possibility of a peat-powered station for the Outer Hebrides, but did not proceed finding it unviable.
