Bowmore Power Station

(Islay Power Station, Bunanuisg Generating Station)

A small diesel power station with a six-bay rubble-built facade located next to the A846 road on the eastern edge of Bowmore, the Islay Power Station is today operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and has a generation capacity of 6MW. The station was built by the Royal Air Force at the end of the Second World War, to power their own facilities, and taken on by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in 1949. It has subsequently been expanded several times and now also provides the island's depot for SSE Power Distribution Systems. There is an electricity substation adjacent and diesel storage tanks to the rear. Islay was connected to the mainland grid in 1962, with cables routed via Jura, so the station now only serves as a backup supply.
