Auskerry Lighthouse

Comprising a 34m (112-foot) white tower, the Auskerry Lighthouse is located on the southern tip of the small, flat island of Auskerry, which lies in the North Sea, to the northeast of the Orkney Mainland. Built of brick, it was completed in 1866 by the engineering brothers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87) and has a range of 18 miles (29 km). The lighthouse was bombed by an aircraft in 1943. It was automated in 1961 and the keepers' cottages sold into private ownership. The lighthouse is remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters, based in Edinburgh.
