Sir John Lyon

c.1340 - 1382

Chamberlain of Scotland and ancestor of the Earls of Strathmore. Son of John de Lyon, feudal Baron of Forteviot, Lyon served as Chamberlain of Scotland between 1377 and his death. In 1372, King Robert II granted Lyon various lands, including those around Glamis. Established as the Thane of Glamis, he married Robert II's daughter, Princess Joanna (c.1376). The Princess was the widow of Sir John Keith and by this marriage Lyon also became Thane of Tannadyce. Lyon was killed in a duel at Balhall (Angus) by Sir James Lindsay of Crawford. He was buried at Scone Abbey and was succeeded by his only son.
