John de Chastelain


1937 -

Canadian general and peace negotiator. Born in Bucharest (Romania), the son of two wartime spies, de Chastelain was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh before settling with his family in Canada in 1954. He became a professional soldier, working his way up from the ranks to become a popular General and eventually Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff. De Chastelain was appointed Chair of the Decommissioning Body tasked with disarming the para-militaries as part of the Northern Ireland peace process.
