George Rennie


1801 - 1860

Artist, politician and governor. Nephew of engineer John Rennie (1761 - 1821), who was a childhood friend of Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-66) and went on to study art in Rome. Amongst his artistic works were busts of his uncle and the inventor Andrew Meikle (1719 - 1811).

He was elected Member of Parliament for Ipswich (England) in 1841 and served as Governor of the Falkland Islands between 1848 and 1855.
