Anne Redpath

1895 - 1965

Painter. Born in Galashiels, the daughter of a textile weaver, Redpath was educated at Hawick High School and Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1918. She won a travelling scholarship the following year and was able to visit Belgium, France and Italy. Later, Redpath accompanied her architect husband, James Beattie Michie (1891 - 1959), to France in 1920, where the couple lived until 1934. Returning to Hawick, Redpath began to paint seriously in both oil and water-colour. Initially her work was largely still-life, but in her later career she chose Mediterranean subjects, which she painted using intense colours, revealing the influences of her time on the continent. Redpath grew to become one of Scotland's most important artists of the 20th C. and was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1952. She died at her home in Drumsheugh Gardens, Edinburgh, and her funeral held at Warriston Crematorium.
